WOYZECK ON THE HIGHVELD

Woyzeck as a migrant worker during the industrialisation of Johannesburg in the 1950s: This production combines wooden puppets and animated sketches by the video artist William Kentridge (and a dash of vaudeville) to conjure stirringly insightful images that illustrate Woyzeck’s emotional struggle and suffering. Veritable multimedia theatre that simultaneously preserves the “handmade” objects of traditional theatre while striving to adapt to the new possibilities of the digital era. Justifiably, this production has become an international classic able to inspire audiences both young and old. BÜCHNER international is hosting this – in Germany – hitherto seldom-played production before it ultimately disappears into the archives.

Handspring won the 2011 "Tony Award"; the numerous awards and invitations that Kentridge has received, including an invitation to the Documenta in Kassel, speak for themselves.
